Legal Issues: What You Need to Know as a Nonprofit Board Member

Whether you serve on a non-profit that is a school, library, arts organization or land trust, all board service carries with it certain legal responsibilities and liabilities. Rob Levin, a Portland-based attorney who works with nonprofits, will talk about what concepts like duty of care and duty of loyalty mean in practice. He will also discuss employment matters, by-laws, meeting rules, liability questions, conflicts of interests and public access to meeting issues. Most importantly he will be available to answer your questions.

Target Audience: Individuals who serve on non-profit boards in the Blue Hill Area that employ one or more professional staff. There are only 30 seats available for this event, on a first-come, first served basis.
Cost: $35 per participant. Includes dinner with Barncastle pizza, salad and wine. Dietary restrictions should be e-mailed at the time of registration to rboulet@bhpl.net. We will invoice you after registration is complete.

Rob Levin (www.roblevin.net) has extensive experience in nonprofit organization legal matters, land conservation transactions and related tax issues. Over the last 12 years, he has consulted for the Maine Association of Nonprofits, the Land Trust Alliance and has represented dozens of Maine nonprofits. Rob has spoken at many conferences, including the Land Trust Alliance Rally and the Maine Land Trust Network Conference, and has written several papers on nonprofit and conservation issues.
On a personal note, Rob and his wife Sarah walked to Maine from Maryland in 2002 for their honeymoon. And in 2012 they bicycled 2,001 miles with their 5-year-old daughter on a grand tour around Maine, Atlantic Canada, and Quebec.
