Following a collaborative residency, Janet Underhill, (bassoon and contra-bassoon) and Leslie Ross (bassoon) will share an evening of improvisations of scored and open pieces. Patrick Crossland on trombone will be joining them.

Growing up in southern Louisiana, Patrick Crossland began playing trombone at age 10. In addition to his activities as a soloist and chamber musician, he is an avid improviser, performing and recording with artists including Günter Christmann, Alexander Frangenheim, and Jack Wright. Recent festival performances include High Zero (Baltimore) and concepts of doing (Berlin). Patrick is the recipient of Maryland State Arts Council Awards and currently teaches trombone and improvisation at UMBC.

Janet Underhill, a native of British Columbia, has been a bassoonist, teacher and arts administrator in the Boston area for over 30 years. She is a founding member of Arcadian Winds, a woodwind quintet specializing in contemporary music, which has commissioned and premiered more than 50 works. She has toured extensively as a soloist from working with The Pittsburgh Symphony to the Women’s Avant Festival in Chicago, to Alea III in Naxos, Greece and Soundwaves in St. Petersburg, Russia. As a soloist and ensemble member she appeared in over 30 CDs and numerous radio broadcasts.

After training on baroque and classical bassoon, Leslie Ross plunged into the free improv scene of downtown NYC in the mid- 80’s and has immersed herself in experimental music ever since. In the same period, her connected, parallel work as baroque bassoon builder also opened up into explorations of invented instruments and sound installations. She has played and exhibited internationally. In 2014 she relocated music studio, workshop and living quarters to rural Maine, where she has also launched The Cannery at South Penobscot as a center for experimental sound, music and performance.
