The Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev wrote Peter and the Wolf in 1936 for a children’s theater in Moscow. The piece is a “symphonic fairy tale for children” intended to introduce young audiences to the orchestra and its various instruments.
The story follows a young boy named Peter who lives with his grandfather in a forest clearing. A different instrument in the orchestra represents each character. “Peter and the Wolf has been adapted into numerous formats, including animated films, recordings, and live performances. Its unique combination of storytelling and orchestral music has made it a popular introduction to classical music for new audiences.
