Join us for a sneak peek of Rural Hall’s 5th Annual Art Exhibit and Sale and enjoy special presentations by visual artists Michelle Hauser and Sally Eckhoff.

At 6:30pm there will be a Screening of “The Innocent Bystander” by Sally Eckhoff ~ an animation of the iconic song by Dan Hicks. Since it premiered in 2023 it has been shown at film festivals both internationally and across the country. We are thrilled to be screening it here at Rural Hall.
Michelle Hauser’s talk will include live and projected images from her ongoing photographic project: “Halls of Power.” Selections of this project were exhibited at the Blue Hill Library in May of 2025. Her series documenting Maine’s historic meeting halls aims to illuminate this older form of social interaction. Her talk will explore the rich symbolism and the significant role that volunteer societies and fraternal organizations have played in invigorating American democracy.

The presentations will honor our legacy by inviting more people in to explore the dynamic of current and previous generations, whose spirit, time and materials created irreplaceable civic spaces, like Rural Hall, for us to share. Free and open to the public. Light refreshment will be served.
*This event is supported by The Kindling Fund, a grant program administered by SPACE as part of the Andy Warhol Foundation For The Visual Arts Regional Regranting Program.

This presentation is the first event in the Surry Rural Hall Summer Series. The public is invited to our 5th Annual Art Exhibit and Sale: Take Five! on Sunday, Aug. 10th from 4:00-6:00pm and the Surry Garden Club’s Floral Demonstration, “Art from YOUR Garden” with Vince Butera on Wednesday, Aug. 13th.
