Spring Conservation Lecture Series Celebrating ANP Centennial

Blue Hill Heritage Trust and Downeast Audubon as Centennial Partners are excited to present their spring conservation lecture series honoring Acadia National Park. Founded in 1916, the Park has had a monumental impact on our region. This series marks the start of many programs being presented in celebration of the Park’s birthday on Mount Desert Island and the Blue Hill Peninsula.

Tuesday, April 19: Dr. Duane Braun and his wife, Ruth, well known geologists in the area, lecture will focus on where the region came from, how Mount Desert Island put itself together and how the glaciation sculpted the present landscape around us including the Blue Hill Peninsula. They are co-authors of the Geologic Guide to Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park, which will be released in June.

Thursday, April 21: Jack Russell, co-chair of the Centennial Task Force, will present how the conservation movement in the early 1900’s came to establish ANP and how it has impacted the area since. Born on Mount Desert and survived the fire of 1947, Jack has been connected to the Island all his life in many ways.

Tuesday, April 26: Seth Benz, director of the Bird Ecology Lab at Schoodic Peninsula, will discuss the wildlife in the Park and give a glimpse into the future specifically to the anticipated changes with birdlife. Highly knowledgeable, Seth engages people of all ages in science and the natural wonders of our world.

All lectures are free, open to the public and will be held at the Blue Hill Public Library with a reception at 630p and lecture at 7pm. For info – contact BHHT at 374-5118 or DEA at www.downeastaudubon.org.
