Local writer and teacher Susan Hand Shetterly will launch her new book, Seaweed Chronicles: A World at the Water’s Edge, in an event with readings and discussion at the Blue Hill Public Library on Tuesday, August 7th at 7:00 PM.

The book is about seaweed species, the wild lives they feed and shelter, the harvesters who cut seaweeds, and the aquaculturists who grow them. It explores the work of scientists who protect habitats that are essential to the well-being of the oceans, and those who struggle to provide jobs for coastal people.

Susan Hand Shetterly has written about wildlife and wildlands for over thirty years. Her book, Settled in the Wild, won the Maine Literary Award for Best Nonfiction from the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance in 2011. She is the author of the essay collection The New Year’s Owl, and several children’s books, including her book about forests, Shelterwood. A contributing writer to Maine Times from 1980 to 1996, Susan´s articles have appeared in various magazines, including Birder’s World, Audubon Magazine, Yankee, and Down East. Susan also works with land trusts to save habitat.
