Karin and Michael Wilkes founded Courthouse Gallery Fine Art in 2006 with a mission to present high-quality works of art through curated exhibitions and special events. The gallery is housed in Ellsworth’s historic courthouse and registry of deeds, two beautifully restored 1830s Greek revival buildings offering over 4500 square feet of exhibition space. The combination of this historic site and the ability to exhibit a wide range of artistic styles in a spacious gallery has made Courthouse Gallery Fine Art a destination for art collectors statewide and beyond. A large-scale sculpture park occupies the sweeping lawn out front.
The Wilkeses, who have always been passionate about art, represent a select stable of contemporary Maine artists, including established artists, whose work can be found in major collections nationally, emerging artists, and estates. They view the gallery as a place where the conversation about Maine’s role in American art continues through a rotating schedule of solo and group exhibitions highlighting contemporary painting, sculpture, and photography by artists living or working in Maine. They also host artists’ talks, special exhibitions, events, and guest speakers. In 2012, the Wilkeses began publishing a line of fine art books under the imprint Marshall Wilkes to celebrate and document Maine-inspired artists and art history.
