Carolyn Butera, Artist

Trained as a botanical artist, Carolyn Butera lives on the Blue Hill Peninsula where she paints watercolor portraits of marine life. Her collection of highly detailed, watercolor “portrait paintings” of blue mussel Mytilus edulis shells from Downeast Maine is scheduled for solo exhibition in the galleries of the Blue Hill Library in February 2026. Her following collection will feature portrait paintings from Sicily of Mytilus galloprovincialisone of three closely related species in the Mytilus edulis complex of blue mussels.

Original paintings are produced using multiple layers of transparent watercolor paint and completed with handmade shell, seaweed, and barnacle pigment on Fabriano paper from Italy. The collection of NFS originals is available for exhibition. Framing of Carolyn’s artwork is professionally done in Bar Harbor using antique frames. All fine art prints are professionally printed in Maine on 100% cotton rag paper, hand signed by Carolyn, and available for purchase at in-person events.  A certificate of authenticity accompanies each artwork.

Carolyn is a member of the following: American Society of Marine Artists, American Society of Botanical Artists, New England Society of Botanical Artists, the Deer Isle Artists Association and serves as an instructor for Acadia Senior College.
