Crime fiction is more popular than ever. From the police procedural to the political thriller, from cozy crime to psychological thriller, crime novels are consistently at the top of best seller lists. Literary writings throughout the ages demonstrate that mysteries to be solved, themes of retribution and justice explored, or the simple pleasure of puzzling out “who did it,” have long fascinated the human mind.
In this colloquy we will explore what goes into crafting a good crime novel by doing a survey of its history and genres, followed by discussions of four crime novels of different genres. Conversation will center on analysis of narrative voice and structure.
