Sea glass is a wonderful treasure because mother nature transforms our discarded waste and returns it anew. Along with sea glass, the seashore also contains many other bits of human existence. Yet identifying the origin and history of a beach found artifact can sometimes be more difficult than spotting the rarity itself. Researching these discoveries is an educational process that requires close observation and perseverance.
Beachcomber, Connor O’Brien, uses found treasures to create assemblage and photography that highlights the historical and aesthetic nature of sea glass. During this Friends of the Field webinar Connor will share some of his beach discoveries and the accompanying stories, mysteries solved and questions unanswered. Tips on how to find and identify sea glass and other sought after beach treasures will be included as well. Join us for a virtual walk on the beach!
Connor discovered sea glass after moving to Bar Harbor in 2013. Captivated by its charm and curious to know more, beach combing became part of his study at College of the Atlantic. His philosophy of beach combing merges a love of the seashore, natural history, earth sciences, and human ecology. Connor’s sea glass exhibition has been shown at NASGA and The North East Sea Glass Expo, as well as museums and libraries around Mount Desert Island.
