Summary:
Under the supervision of the Cardiopulmonary Services Medical Director and Department Director, the Respiratory Therapist is responsible for providing cardiopulmonary care services in accordance with specific physician’s orders, diagnostic, therapeutic and clinical assessments, provides patient education according to department policies and procedures.

Responsibilities:
PEOPLE
o Interacts effectively in stressful and emergency situations
o Receives positive ratings from staff, patients, and families regarding their interactions and job performance
o Effectively communicates with management, staff, patients, families and physicians
o Supports a team approach to patient care and department responsibilities and needs
o Demonstrates the ability to work effectively with other staff members, management, and physicians
o Uses appropriate chain of command
o Supports a responsibility for patient care by accepting assignments
o Supports a responsibility for patient care by accepting assignments
o Demonstrates a willingness to be available for call and have flexible hours
o Uses break time appropriately
o Attends at least 50% of department meetings unless on approved leave
o Satisfies requirements for state licensure in a timely fashion
o Performs the duties of Charge Therapist: a. Down-staff and upstaff criteria are appropriately assigned; b. Workload is appropriately and fairly assigned and delegated; c. Proper chain of command is utilized in dealing with problem areas or situations; d. Equipment is processed and available for the on-coming shift; e. All avenues to provide adequate coverage for the on-coming shift are exhausted; f. Emergency situations are responded to quickly
o Reads and initials the department communication book

SERVICE
o Demonstrates efficient and effective decision making skills for the non-acute and acute respiratory care of the: neonate, pediatric patient, adult
o Notifies physician and department supervisor when requests for service do not fit protocols or when patient exhibits intolerance to treatment
o Collaborates with healthcare team
o Implements respiratory interventions according to policies, procedures, and protocols
o Assumes responsibility for patient transport as needed by demonstrating the skills and knowledge necessary to provide patient transport
o Demonstrates the skills necessary to initiate and maintain mechanical ventilation and airway adjuncts for the adult, neonatal, and pediatric patient
o Maintains certifications and annual competencies
o Responds in a timely fashion to requests for service

QUALITY
o Attends all mandatory in-services and skills days unless on approved leave
o Satisfies requirements for state licensure in a timely fashion
o Maintains airway management certification
o Contributes to a clean, neat, and well-stocked work area
o Follows through on problem patients, equipment, or areas that may compromise patient care and safety of patients/family/and others
o Assists in cleaning, processing and assembling respiratory therapy equipment
o Follows CLIO, OSHA and hospital policy regarding procurement and handling of specimens and sharps
o Demonstrates ongoing awareness of and participates in the department’s QI initiatives
o Completes all audits or other assignments as assigned
o Identifies potential areas for quality improvement
o Participates in solving identified problems

FINANCE
o Assesses and documents accurately the patient’s respiratory status and response to treatment
o Completes all documentation according to hospital and department policy and procedure: patient charges; treatment sheets; MARs; care plans; Patient/Family education; all department QI forms

Other information:
Registered Respiratory Therapist Required.
