For most of us painting from life is the most stimulating experience and leads to the most exciting compositions. But sometimes, like during our long Maine winters, working from photos is a good alternative. But translating life force and energy from a flat photo is often challenging. The tendency toward literal translation in composition and color is hard to resist.
Through demos and one-on-one guidance, artist Linda Packard will show you ways to find the most compelling elements in your photos and work them into a dynamic composition; simplifying the reference image to its essence using color, shape, line; moving to expression rather than description. This is for painters with some experience with his or her chosen medium. Focus is completely on composition, not painting technique. Demos will be in oil but all mediums are welcome. Solvents will be used. $100 for members/$110 for non-members. A list of supplies to bring will be emailed to registered participants. Space is limited and pre-registration is required at https://woodlawnmuseum.com/event/making-dynamic-expressive-paintings-reference-photos-linda-packard/
