Blue Hill Public Library will host two screenings of the award-winning film Lobster War on Thursday, October 17th at 4:00 pm and again at 7:00 pm. The film is about “a climate-fueled conflict between the United States and Canada over waters that both countries have claimed since the end of the Revolutionary War.”

The disputed 277 square miles of sea, known as the Gray Zone, were traditionally fished by US lobstermen. But as the Gulf of Maine has warmed faster than nearly any other body of water on the planet, the area’s previously modest lobster population has surged. As a result, Canadians have begun to assert their sovereignty, leading to a conflict with the Americans.

The film’s director, producer, and co-director of photography, David Abel, will join the audience for a live video chat Q&A after the matinee screening of the film. Abel is a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter who covers fisheries and environmental issues for The Boston Globe.

This screening is a unique opportunity. Unlike many films shown at the library, this one will not become part of the circulation collection after the screening.

These screenings are sponsored by the library. There is no charge, and everyone is welcome. For more information contact the library at 374-5515.
