The Blue Hill Public Library’s Britton Gallery and Howard Room will host an exhibit project for the month of February of canvas prints documenting an ongoing, annual mural painting. The show, Merz Barn Farm: A Decade of Making, will feature images of murals designed and painted by Orland artists Corey Paradise, Cullen Schneider, and local art teacher Sarah Moon, along with friends and family. The public is invited to a reception on Friday, February 21st from 4:00 to 6:00 PM.

The Merz Barn mural can easily be seen from route 15 near the Orland town line where the farm’s greenhouses supply flowers for Cullen’s business, Fairwinds Florist in Blue Hill. Each summer the artists gather at the solstice for an art-making party to paint a new mural on the barn. Layout and design is always a collaboration of all those present. Corey, who owns Paradise Tattoo, also in Blue Hill, says that living with public art in a rural setting is one of his favorite things about the project. But for Cullen, it’s the brevity of each design. “By midwinter it feels as familiar as a comfortable sweater, and it can be hard to imagine painting over it, but as soon as the next one is done the question is raised, ‘what will we paint next year?’”

The show is in the library’s Britton Gallery and Roland Howard Room, available for viewing beginning during library hours, subject to the Howard Room schedule. For more information contact the library at 374-5515.
