DESCRIPTION:Author and historian Candice Hooper will read from and discuss
her recent book\, Lincoln's Generals' Wives\, at the Blue Hill Public Libr

l War is not complete without examining the extraordinary and influential
lives of Jessie Frémont\, Nelly McClellan\, Ellen Sherman\, and Julia Gra
nt\, the wives of Abraham Lincoln’s top generals. They were their husban
ds’ closest confidantes and had a profound impact on the generals’ amb
itions and actions. The book covers the early lives of the subjects\, as w
ell as their families\, education\, political attitudes\, and personal bel
iefs.\n\nLincoln's Generals' Wives is the recipient of the 2018 Gold Medal
in Nonfiction from the Sarton Women’s Book Awards\, the 2017 Silver Ben
jamin Franklin Book Prize in History from the Independent Book Publishers
Association\, and the 2017 Bronze Medal in History from the Independent Pu
blisher Book Awards.\n\nWith an undergraduate degree in journalism from th
e University of Illinois and a law degree from Georgetown University\, it
was only after a career on Capitol Hill as an aide to the late Congressman
Charlie Wilson and as a lobbyist that Candace Hooper “discovered” her
true intellectual passion. Returning to school in 2006\, she earned an MA
in history\, with a concentration in military history\, from George Washi
ngton University. Hooper’s work has appeared in the New York Times\, The
Journal of Military History\, and The Michigan War Studies Review.\n\nBoo
